I love this so much! This was one of my favorite lines: I am from the house with the off-limits living room, Doilied, tidy, not to be messed" and this one raised so many questions: "The grandma who was the queen of the fair." Thanks so much for sharing Sue!
Moved from Missouri to Oregon 8 years ago and it had a marked effect on my writing. I live near the ocean where sensory details are plentiful. I laughed the other day waiting in line at the Human Bean - a seagull was standing on the vehicle in front of me. I have written quite a few haikus about my love for the geography here.
I enjoy reading The Wonder Report! A welcome respite.
Thank you! It's so interesting what a difference a place can make on our lives, our work, and even spirits.
By the way, you won a copy of Mildred's Garden! I sent a message through your site, but if you don't get that, be sure to respond to any copy of The Wonder Report and send me your address. Thanks!
I, as Sue commented, also want to try the template - it’s already got me thinking! So good. And I love the Japanese link with seasonal sensory memories. I could talk to you for hours about that! Wonderful.
That Japanese word has given me so much to think about too. So many of my longings and memories seem to be connected to the seasons. (And I'd love to read your "Where I'm from" poem too!
I love this idea of writing a "Where I'm from" poem. I will give it a try and may or may not share!
Did you try it? I'd love to hear even a phrase or two!
I tried to respond the other day that I have not tried it yet, but now I have. Here is what I have written.
I am from maple syrup.
From the Flintstones and Pledge.
I am from the house with the off-limits living room,
Doilied, tidy, not to be messed.
I am from daffodils, joyous faces lifted to the sky, from cherry and apple trees.
I’m from perfectly steeped tea and proper behaviour.
From Amy and her talking parrot, the Finches and the Mitchells.
I’m from pie-making and canning, and work before rest views.
From “where there’s a will, there’s a way” and “a job worth doing is worth doing right”.
I’m from sword drills and Gospel music, flannelgraphs and Mary-janes.
I’m from good English stock and long-hidden skeletons
Caramel-drenched Christmas puddings and the world’s best better tarts.
From the dad who fought fires while his face grew lines of laughter,
The grandma who was the queen of the fair.
Mementos lie undisturbed in drawers of this far-away family.
So much space between the person I am and the place where I am from.

I’m so glad you like it. Thank you for the prompt - it made me ponder some things about family and my history.
